School Named Sexually Healthy and Responsible Seminary

The Religious Institute, a multi-faith organization dedicated to sexual health, education and justice, recently named the Wake Forest University School of Divinity among twenty seminaries that meet a majority of criteria to be considered a sexually healthy and responsible seminary. The inclusion of the School of Divinity indicates a high level of commitment to the sexual health of the institution and to the sexuality education of our students.

Rev. Debra W. Haffner, Executive Director of the Religious Institute, comments that, “There is an urgent need for ordained clergy who understand the connections between religion and sexuality, particularly given that so many denominations are concerned about sexual abuse or embroiled in controversies over sexual orientation issues.”

For more than ten years, the Religious Institute has advocated for sexuality counseling and training for future religious leaders including understanding professional boundaries and ethics, ministerial formation on sexuality, speaking prophetically on issues of sexual justice, and providing the skills needed to minister to their congregants and communities.
