Introducing Project Chapel

Beginning the Spring Term 2012, Wake Forest University School of Divinity is sponsoring a weekly chapel series called Project Chapel. Project Chapel engages the denominational and liturgical diversity of the School of Divinity and the local community to model worship renewal.  Project Chapel will be offered each week of the semester along with the school’s long-standing Tuesday chapel services which feature third-year student preachers. The project team, made up of faculty members, students, and local ministry leaders, hopes that Project Chapel will contribute to communal and spiritual formation and provide opportunities for students to explore and experience diverse worship practices.

Spoken Word” is the first service in the Project Chapel series and features guest “spoken word” artist and biblical scholar, Valerie Bridgeman, and an ensemble of local jazz musicians, including Matt Kendrick from the University Department of Music and Justin Tillman, a local jazz trumpeter. Bridgeman joins the School of Divinity as a guest from Lancaster Theological Seminary where she is Associate Professor of Bible, Homiletics, and Worship. The worship service will begin with jazz and coffee at 11am in the Lower Auditorium of Wingate Hall on the campus of Wake Forest University. Bridgeman and Kendrick will lead a “spoken word” workshop on Thursday evening at 8:00pm in Wingate 302. The public is invited to the worship event and the workshop.

Project Chapel is funded by a Worship Renewal Grant awarded to the School of Divinity by the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, Grand Rapids, Michigan. The School submitted a grant proposal bearing the title “Many Gifts, One Body: Renewing Worship at an Ecumenical Divinity School” and was awarded the grant in January 2011. The Worship Renewal Grants Program is generously supported by Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Incorporated. For a complete list of grant recipients and to learn more about the Worship Renewal Grants Program, see the Grants section of the Calvin Institute for Christian Worship website, www.calvin.edu/worship.
