Craig D. Atwood is Director of Admissions for the School of Divinity and teaches in the areas of theology, historical theology, and Moravian studies. Previously he served the School of Divinity as the Director of Public Theology programs and was Theologian in Residence at Home Moravian Church. His position is named for the Moravian bishop and theologian John Amos Comenius (1592-1670), who is known today as "the father of modern education." Comenius was an active public figure who drew upon his faith to confront the injustices and cruelties of his age. Following in the foot steps of Comenius, Craig is strongly committed to Christian education has taught a wide variety of courses at the masters and undergraduate level, and his Adult Bible Class was broadcast on local radio for several years (visit www.theflamingheretic.wordpress.com for transcripts).
Craig has advised several senior projects and independent study projects at Wake Forest. Craig is the author of The Theology of the Czech Brethren from Hus to Comenius (Penn State Press, 2009), the award-winning Community of the Cross: Moravian Piety in Colonial Bethlehem (Penn State Press, 2005), and Always Reforming: A History of Christianity Since 1300 (Mercer University Press, 2001). He is the editor of several works, including the three most recent editions of the Handbook of Denominations in the United States (Abingdon Press, 2001, 2005, 2010), one of the most widely-used reference books on American religion. He has published numerous articles on various aspects of German Pietism, especially the theology and praxis of Zinzendorf and the Moravians, and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Moravian History. Craig is an ordained minister in the Moravian Church and was the pastor of an urban church in Philadelphia while pursuing his Ph.D. at Princeton Theological Seminary. He has served as the chaplain of both Moravian College in Pennsylvania and Salem College in North Carolina. At Salem College he was also the Clarkson S. Starbuck Assistant Professor of Religion. Craig began his professional career as Director of Admissions for Moravian Theological Seminary, where he received his M.Div. degree. He received the David Bishop Award for academic excellence from Moravian Seminary and the Dale Brown Award for excellence in scholarship from the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies. He married to Julie Atwood and has four daughters.
