Seasons of Fasting and Feasting
Worship and Preaching through Lent and Easter, Year C
Pancakes and ashes. What do the two have in common?
On the eve of Ash Wednesday, some communities observe Shrove Tuesday. Shrove Tuesday, sometimes called Fat Tuesday, marks the end of revelry associated with carnival or Mardi Gras. Shrove Tuesday is also known in some circles as Pancake Day because of the historical practice of feasting on pancakes on that day in order to consume the household’s sugar, fat, flour, and eggs, all items restricted during the Lenten Fast. The day after Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, marks the start of the season of Lent. With foreheads marked by the ashy symbol of fasting or mourning, Christians throughout the season of Lent consider the power and importance of lament, death, and repentance to Christian faith as they look forward to Easter’s promises of resurrection, feasting, renewal, and new life.
Pancakes and ashes. Feasting and fasting. Join us for a day of reflecting on how rhythms of feasting and fasting, fasting and feasting, are central to the liturgical seasons of Lent and Easter. Together we will explore the biblical texts for Year C of the lectionary and possibilities for worship and preaching during the season. We will also consider the rhythm of fasts and feasts in a world where too many face empty tables throughout the year. Lent calls us to prepare again for Easter promises of abundant feasts for all of God’s people.
