Internships

Burlington, NC: Ministerial Intern

Posted April 29, 2013

Internship at Brick Reformed United Church of Christ

Intern would be in mentoring relationship with Rev. Kristin Gerner Vaughn, Senior/Solo Pastor. Areas of ministry practice for the intern would include but not be limited to:

  • Ministering to youth and young adults.
  • Forming relationships with youth and families
  • Creating meaningful opportunities for youth in the areas of worship, faith formation, spiritual growth, service, overall involvement in the wider-United Church of Christ
  • Attending business meetings of the church consistory
  • Shadowing pastoral care visits with pastor
  • Serving communion to homebound members
  • Weekly staff meetings
  • Assisting in the planning and leading of worship

The church has needs in the areas of youth and family ministry as well as music. A person who is gifted in helping to begin a choir (intergenerational) would be amazingly useful to the church. However, it is not a requirement. Likewise, we would put to good use the gifts of a guitarist/instrumentalist, however, this would not be the primary focus of their time here.

Brick Church is a growing congregation. The church has deep roots as it got its beginning in 1748 by 2 Clapp brothers from Germany who was in search of land to settle their community. Upon finding that land, the people of the community built a church to signify God’s importance in all that they do. Until this day God continues to be integral in every part of this community’s life. The church sits in the midst of a community that embraces it fully. God is a part of our work and play as many of the church and community members are farmers, seeing to it that they tend to the soil as God has called them.

The church has grown from an average Sunday worship attendance of 65 in 2008 to an average attendance of 117 in 2012. We have 55 children and 20 active middle/high youth. The recent growth experience by the church has produced great movement in the church to support the members of the church by ensuring that our infrastructure supports the growing needs of the congregation and community.

We are in the process of discussing our next building expansion as we have outgrown our current fellowship space.

A community of believers and a family of faith with deep roots grounding us in history and many branches reaching us into the future.

Edwardsville, IL: Summer Ministry Intern

Posted April 19, 2013

ESIC Baptist Church Description

ESIC Baptist Church is a small progressive Cooperative Baptist Fellowship church in Edwardsville, Illinois, a suburb of St. Louis, MO. Edwardsville is an up and coming community in the St. Louis area and rich in culture, food, music, and educational opportunities. Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville is just outside the city and some students do attend our services.

ESIC Baptist is a relational church that welcomes people who are looking for a varied worship experience and a feeling of family. Our church’s mission is to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love our neighbors as ourselves.  We are lead by a team of ordained ministers who share the preaching and pastoral care needs of the congregation. Our small choir is mighty in voice and heart with a bit of accompanying talent. A majority of our members hold advanced degrees and work in a variety of professions; some have grown up Baptist, but most have not. We highly value education and wish to assist in educating future ministers/church leaders through a summer internship experience that could possibly lead to an on-going ministry partnership.

ESIC Baptist Church is seeking a summer intern who desires to have a hands-on ministry experience full of variety. We are very affirming of women in ministry and would love to partner with and train any person who is exploring ministry as a life work.

Summer Intern Job Description

Over the course of 10 weeks, the summer intern will receive training and have the following opportunities

-       Prepare lessons and teach Sunday School classes of any/every age group

-       Work with the youth group (approximately 12-15 students)

-       Assist with planning and teaching Vacation Bible School

-       Lead a weekly Bible Study at a senior retirement village

-       Visit the hospitalized and homebound with a trained chaplain

-       Preach 2 to 3 times

-       Work with missions committee to develop and implement mission outreach strategies and programs

-       Develop and co-lead studies on prayer, increasing justice issues awareness, the Church engaging culture, and topics of interest to the intern

[Although all of these opportunities exist, some are negotiable. If an intern wishes to pursue additional areas of ministry or definitely does not feel called to one of the above opportunities she/he can voice these and we will work with the intern to provide support and challenges that are appropriate.]

The intern will meet weekly with a primary supervising pastor and will have the opportunity to meet with an individual who has a certificate in spiritual direction. If so desired, the summer intern will also have opportunities to dine with and develop relationships with several church leaders and their families.

ESIC Baptist prefers the intern have her/his own vehicle for transportation, but if one is not available will work to provide the intern with a vehicle. ESIC will reimburse all transportation and church work costs. ESIC will provide room and board in a pastor’s home, which includes a private living area with private bathroom, swimming pool, lake, workout facility, and a nearby 100-mile bicycle trail system.

A stipend of $1,500.00 from the church with potential additional $600.00 from CBF will be provided.

Greensboro, NC: Garden Ministry Intern

Garden Ministry Intern

First Christian Church is in search of an intern to work with our growing community garden ministry. The Garden Ministry of First Christian Church exists to use the gifts and talents of the congregation to grow fresh produce to share with the community, and to encourage healthy eating and the support of locally-grown foods.

Our garden is tended completely by volunteers from the congregation, who plant and harvest food to be shared with the church and a local food pantry. A strong and committed volunteer base means this program is growing as we enter our fifth season and the right candidate for this internship will help us tap into this momentum and share the harvest with our community. The position is ideal for a college or seminary student interested in community gardening, ministry, non-profit management, or community service.
